Biography
Hello, what to know about me...
My name is Benjamin Olson, but everyone knows me as Ben. I am a recent graduate of Iowa State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. I also earned a Certificate of Leadership Studies and a minor in Agricultural Education. I have three years of creative videography experience with the digital network, Cyclones.tv. I also have video production experience through an internship with the Iowa Cubs. I’m a digital media professional, with strengths in creative content, non-linear editing, and live production. My experience and skills include operating professional broadcast equipment, shooting for sports, comprehensive understanding of Adobe products, live event production, script writing, and broadcast journalism.
I was raised on a farm in Northwest Iowa in a family of five. I have always had an interest in public speaking, sports, and agriculture. Throughout high school, I was involved in four sports, student government, speech, band, vocal, FFA, and National Honor Society. All of these experiences prepared me for involvement at Iowa State University.

I enrolled at Iowa State with the intentions of majoring in journalism or agricultural studies. By the end of my freshmen year I had enjoyed all of my journalism courses, especially my video production class. As a result, I put an emphasis on videography and sports media throughout my four years at the Greenlee School of Journalism. I joined the student-run video production club, ISUtv. I was involved with this club all four years of college. I was able to learn how to produce, direct, and anchor and electronic news production, as well as create news packages and graphics. Also a result of my video interests, a couple friends and I started to make creative videos as a hobby. My journalism major and relative video experience allowed me to start my job with Cyclones.tv as a sophomore, at the beginning of 2017.

Working for Cyclones.tv was an amazing experience, as I am a life-long Cyclone fan. As a student videographer, I helped primarily with content creation for Cyclones.tv. I covered sporting events for all sixteen of the Iowa State athletic programs, filmed highlights, and put together promotional and recap videos for different social media. I learned how to use a variety of different video technology and equipment, find creativity, improve upon video editing, and shoot for multiple sports. In my final two years, I was able to help with running a wireless and stationary camera for live Cyclones.tv broadcasts.

During the summer of 2019, I was a video production intern for the Iowa Cubs, the Triple-A minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. This experience helped me learn so much more about the production and technical side of video. During this internship we produced the video feed for both the video board inside Principal Park and also the live stream on MiLB.TV. During this internship I directed live broadcasts, and operated stationary and wireless cameras, graphics display for the board and live stream, and the replay system.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, watching sports, drinking craft beer, being outside, or playing the guitar. I am very excited to find my new, post-graduation home.
